This installation, titled, Big Back, draws inspiration from the viral phrase and song that have recently gained popularity. Fat, Black bodies are often teased, objectified, and placed on display in harmful ways. By casting my own fat Black body in plaster cloth and projecting a visual narrative with images and videos, I embody the hypervisibility, historical narratives, and reclamation of my identity.

Medium: 3 Screen Installation

Echoes of Legacy is an interactive installation that combines projection and sound design to explore legacy through archival family photos and voice recordings. I asked my family what legacy means to them and created an altar where visitors can experience their stories firsthand. Using an iPad and TouchOSC, guests can raise a fader to reveal the voices of my family members, each sharing their personal reflections on legacy. This immersive experience invites audiences think about their own family's legacies by engaging with my own. The process of designing this peice was heart warming, emotional, intense, and intentional. As much as I enjoy audiences experiencing this installation, I found the most meaningful part of this process was in the making. This is a project I will be furthering this summer during my time home in D.C. I hope you can draw “perpendiculars” from this piece, that intersect the meaning of legacy for you and your families.

Medium: 2 Screen Installation
Programmed in: Qlab
As the projection designer for Re-Imagining Black ___, I lead the installation and playback of this two screen video installation. I examined the space and projectors available in the theater, facilitated load-in, created content masks, and programmed content in Qlab.
Re-Imagining Black ___, is a two screen video installation created by Sade Ndya, reflecting on the past history and evolving future of black women in cinema. The left channel pays homage to the legacy of iconic black actresses; Cicely Tyson, Diahann Caroll, Pam Grier, Beah Richards, Esther Jones and Hattie McDaniel. The right channel re-imagines the future of roles for black women on screen; from surreal storylines to candid experiences within Black womanhood. The installation spotlights a single theater chair, inviting audiences to interact with the piece. The theater chair symbolizes elevation, granting black women audiences the space to be the core audience of their own stories.
